Amateur Radio VE Testing

We do remote testing on the 3rd Tuesday every month. We also provide on-demand testing. Please reach out to [email protected] to schedule an on-demand test session.

How to Schedule a Test
  1. Get an FRN number from the FCC. If you don't have one, register on the FCC site.
  2. Email us to request an ad-hoc test (please give at least a couple of days and a couple of time options). Or find an open session on HamStudy.
  3. Register for the session.
  4. Learn the requirements before you test.
  5. Pay the invoice before the session (emailed a few days prior). The ARRL VEC charges $15 for adults and $5 for minors.
  6. Watch for the Zoom link — usually emailed on the day of the test.
  7. Be prompt and ready to pass!
What to Bring
  • Photo ID — Driver’s license, passport, or other acceptable ID. A photo ID is preferred, but some exceptions can be made.
  • Calculator (optional) — Remote: use the calculator app on your computer. In-person: a basic calculator is allowed. All memories must be cleared.
  • Scratch paper (optional) — One blank sheet of paper and a pen or pencil.
Remote Testing Requirements
  • Webcam and microphone (headphones are not allowed once testing begins).
  • Stable network connection and Zoom installed.
  • A quiet room with no interruptions.
  • Cover all unused screens (TV and monitors). Clear your testing area of loose papers and ham radio materials.
